Events & Activities

Here at Filey Bird Observatory & Group we organise regular events and activities in the area for members and non-members alike. All are led and organised by our expert team, all are free of charge, and as with all our work, all our efforts are voluntary (so if you attend any of our events and enjoy yourself, feel free to join or make a donation!). Filey and Flamborough

Ringing & Migration Week

Saturday 14th – Sunday 22nd October 2017

Bird ringing – guided migration walks – exclusive talks – childrens activities & more – all free and open to all!

* Please note all ringing demos and walks are weather dependent, and late changes may also be required – see FBOG.CO.UK and FBO.ORG.UK by 7pm the evening before for updates *

EVERY DAY – Ringing at The Country Park, Filey (from dawn to dusk) and The Living Seas Centre, Flamborough (1000-1200hrs): Come and see everything from tiny Goldcrests to birds of prey up close in the hand, and learn all about their amazing lives and journeys from our experts – all welcome, and great for kids and families!

Saturday 14th (day)

0800hrs – FLAMBOROUGH – Moth trapping with Jim at the Living Seas Centre.

1000hrs – FLAMBOROUGH – Migration Walk around the Outer Head with Richard Baines. Meet at the Lighthouse.

1330hrsFILEY – Migration Walk around the Country Park with Richard Baines. Meet at the ringing station in the Country Park.

Saturday 14th (eve)

EVENING TALK in partnership with our friends at SCARBOROUGH BIRDERS: Mark Thomas on Protecting the UK’s Rare Breeding Species. Mark gives us a unique and fascinating insight into what it takes to protect our rare breeders, often at very short notice and in very challenging circumstances! 7.30 for an 8pm start at Forge Valley Inn, 5 Pickering Road, West Ayton YO13 9JE.

Sunday 15th (day)

1200hrs – FLAMBOROUGH – Migration Walk around South Landing with Mark Pearson. Meet at the Living Seas Centre.

Sunday 15th (eve)

EVENING TALK: Mark James Pearson on Filey Bay: Seabird Nirvana. Migrating skuas & shearwaters, point-blank waders on the Brigg, wintering grebes and divers, a quarter of a million breeding seabirds, mega-rare auks and seaducks – Filey Bay has all this and more! Join Mark for a special version of his acclaimed Birdfair talk. BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL – email mpearson@fbog.co.uk to reserve your place. 7pm for a 7.30 start at the Living Seas Centre, South Landing, Flamborough YO15 1AE.

Monday 16th

1230hrs – FLAMBOROUGH – Migration Walk around the Outer Head with an FBO leader. Meet at the Lighthouse.

Tuesday 17th

0730hrs – BEMPTON CLIFFS – Migration Walk around the RSPB reserve with Trevor Charlton. Meet outside the Visitor Centre.

1200hrs – FLAMBOROUGH – Migration Walk around South Landing with Mark Pearson. Meet at the Living Seas Centre.

Wednesday 18th

0730hrs – BEMPTON CLIFFS – Migration Walk around the RSPB reserve with Trevor Charlton. Meet outside the Visitor Centre.

Thursday 19th (day)

0900hrs – FILEY – Migration Walk around the Country Park with Richard Baines. Meet at the ringing station in the Country Park.

1230hrs – FLAMBOROUGH – Migration Walk around the Outer Head with an FBO leader. Meet at the Lighthouse.

Thursday 19th (eve)

EVENING TALK – DOUBLE BILL! Mark James Pearson on Flights to Filey – the wonders of long distance bird migration from across the globe & Richard Baines on The North Yorkshire Turtle Dove Project. 6.45 for a 7pm start at the Evron Centre, 1A John Street, Filey YO14 9DQ.

Friday 20th

0730-0930hrs – HUNMANBY GAP – Visible Migration Drop-in Session with Keith Clarkson. Share the magic of visible migration with FBOG’s vismig guru. Park in the car park at the end of Gap Road you’ll find the team on the clifftop just beyond!

Sat 21st (day)

0730-0930hrs – HUNMANBY GAP – Visible Migration Drop-in Session with Keith Clarkson & Will Scott. Join Will and Keith at this nationally famous vis-mig hotspot and experience raw migration as it happens. See above for details.

Sat 21st (eve)

EVENING TALK: Yoav Perlman on Israel – Where migration is defined. Yoav is an internationally renowned ornithologist and birding expert with an infectious passion for all things migration. Sunday 22nd

Children’s activities in Filey Library to be announced!

Directions to the Filey ringing station: Park in Filey Country Park car park, opposite the caravan site. On foot, take the left-hand track immediately after the cafe. Follow the track for 150m and you’ll see us on your right.
