15th May 2015

A day of promising conditions and a southerly airflow, with the clear highlight being a Red-rumped Swallow briefly over the Tip pools before heading east (TGD) during a day of heavy and relatively consistent hirundine passage. Combined totals of 1325 Swallows, 230 Sand Martins and 120 House Martins were only a percentage of the actual numbers passing through (with counts confined to three hours in the middle of the day and two later in the afternoon). Otherwise, two Garganey flew north on this morning’s seawatch and single Common Sandpiper and Yellow Wagtail were at East Lea, while the most notable of yesterday’s sightings involved three immature Mute Swans in the bay.
