Today’s Bird Race teams produced a merged total of about 83 species in the recording area, the pick of being nine Velvet Scoters,¬†five Little Gulls, two Water Rails, 73 Snow Buntings (68 still in the northern fields, and five in off the sea), no fewer than five wintering Chiffchaffs in Primrose Valley and good numbers of Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting and Grey Partridge, and at least 120 Skylarks (mo). Notable omissions included a complete absence of Coot on local wetlands, and even Canada Goose was awol. A Grey Phalarope flew north in the morning (JS).
