An exceptional arrival of Blackbirds occurred throughout the day, with a minimum of 8,500 counted arriving in off the sea on a broad front. An almost constant stream from early morning onwards was no doubt prompted by high pressure over Scandinavia and low cloud and drizzle over our coastline. Both Fieldfare and Redwing were also arriving in numbers, with up to a thousand of each, while the bay held 150 Common Scoter, two Red-breasted Mergansers, 14 Goldeneye and 20 Wigeon amongst others.
Three Smew were reported flying west over the town (J&TGD), but sadly couldn’t be relocated at The Dams or East Lea, both of which remain quiet but for small numbers of Teal, Wigeon and Curlew and odd Dunlin, Snipe and Redshank.
